The icom Data Suite allows to send data to the Cumulocity Cloud from an INSYS Smart Device.

Situation

The input of an INSYS Smart Device is to be monitored by the icom Data Suite and the value is to be sent to the Cumulocity Cloud.

Solution

The following simple exemplary application monitors input 1 of an INSYS MRX or MRO router and transmits the condition of input 1 to Cumulocity every time it changes.

This Configuration Guide is split in two steps, device registration in the Cumulocity Cloud and the necessary application configurations for sending the value to the cloud service. A device must be registered with the cloud service first before its values can be sent to the cloud. If the device is already registered, the frist step can be skipped.

Device registration

It is prerequisite that you have a Cumulocity Cloud account.
You need to know the serial number of the device to be registered. The serial number is indicated on the device label under S/N and can also be displayed in the System menu on the System data page in the web interface of the INSYS Smart Device.

  1. Log in to your Cumulocity Cloud account.

  2. Click on Other applications () in the top right corner and select Device management.

  3. Click on Register device in the toolbar, enter the serial number of the device and click on the Register device button.

NOTE: The device is registered in Cumulocity with this. Cumulocity is waiting for the first connection of this device.
It is necessary to add the Cumulocity Cloud as a server for receiving messages in the icom Data Suite to complete the registration.

  1. Open another browser tab or window and start the web interface of the icom Data Suite:

  2. In the MessagesCumulocity menu, add a new server () and edit it ():

    • Description: Cumulocity Server

    • Protocol: HTTPS

    • Server: enter the Server-URL of your Cumulocity account [2]

    • Verify server certificate: [3]

    • Verify host name of servers: [4]

    • Device name: enter a descriptive name for your device

    • Device type: insys-device

    • Self registration: [5]

  3. Click on Save settings.

  4. Activate the profile ().

NOTE: The icom Data Suite will now establish the connection to Cumulocity.
You’ll then need to accept the registration in Cumulocity Cloud via the INSYS Smart Device.

  1. Change back to the Cumulocity Cloud browser tab or window.

  2. Click on accept.

Application configuration

It is prerequisite that you have access to the web interface of the icom Data Suite. The Smart Device must have Internet connection. A switch or similar device is connected to input 2.1 of the Smart Device to change its state.

  1. Open the web interface of the icom Data Suite using a browser:

  2. In the Data pointsDigital I/Os menu under Inputs, add a new input ():

    • Description: Input 2.1

    • Input: 2.1 [7]

  3. Click on Save settings.

  4. In the MessagesCumulocity menu, add a new message () and edit it ():

    • Description: Input message

    • Class: Measurement

    • Measurement title: Input 2.1

    • Type: Inputs

    • Unit: State

    • Data points: check above added data point input1 - Input 2.1

  5. Click on Save settings.

  6. In the Events menu, add a new event () and edit it ():

    • Description: Send input message to Cumulocity

    • Event: Digital data point has changed

    • Data point: input1 and State change

    • Action: Send message

    • Send message: select above added input message

  7. Click on Save settings.

  8. Activate the profile ().

  9. Toggle the switch on Input 2.1 a few times to generate messages to Cumulocity.

  10. Change back to the Cumulocity Cloud browser tab or window.

  11. Click on Other applications () in the top right corner and select Device management.

  12. Click on All devices in the menu on the left and select the router from the device list.

  13. Click on Measurements to view the chart just generated.

Troubleshooting

  • You cannot accept the device registration. A pending acceptance message indicates that the icom Data Suite has not yet established the connection to the Cumulocity Cloud. Check the following:

    • Is the Server URL correct?

    • Remove the checks of the verification options temporarily if you’ve tried to protect the connection

    • Does the Smart Device have Internet connection?

1. This IP address and host name only apply in case of a standard default installation.
2. Request these data from Cumulocity.
3. If the checkbox is not checked, all certificates of the server are accepted without verification. Refer to How to Protect Connections Using Certificates to see how to protect this connection
4. If the checkbox is not checked, it will not be verified if the host name of the server corresponds to the Common Name in the certificate.
5. If the checkbox Self registration is checked, the icom Data Suite will register to the cloud server independently and retrieve the access data distinct to the device (user, password and device ID) automatically.
6. This IP address and host name only apply in case of a standard default installation.
7. Input 2.1 is input 1 (IN1) on a card in slot 2 of the router.
